6th Grade Language Arts Lessons and Presentations
Persuasive Writing
Persuasive writing has been a large part of my writing instruction this year. We have a school wide vocabulary program that spirals vocabulary across subject areas, with a formative assessment given in language arts. This writing assessment demonstrates use of weekly vocabulary words as well as knowledge on controversial topics.

Reading Reflections
I feel that students must be in control of what they read, therefore I allow my students to chose their own reading material throughout the year. This was enormously successful in getting my students enthusiastic about reading material that interests them. Students are required to read 15 pages a night (I record the date they will finish) and turn in six reflection questions. They can choose the questions that best fit their book.

Poetry
I have adapted these poetry lessons based on a gifted and talented program called Jacob's Ladder. This William and Mary program is researched based and focuses on higher level thinking. Again, the presentation is adapted to fit a broader range of student abilities.
